Professor Narasimhan “Sim” Jagannathan
I practice clinical pediatric anesthesia at the Ann & Robert H Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (tertiary care children’s hospital doing 25,000 anesthetics in children/ yearly) and I have been in practice here for the past 15 years. I work clinically in full time capacity. I am the Division Head for General Academic Anesthesia (responsible for the oversight of all clinical operations, education & research related activities for general pediatric anesthesia) for the department of Pediatric Anesthesia. I am a Professor of Anesthesiology at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. I completed my anesthesiology residency at the Cleveland Clinic in 2005 and subsequently did my fellowship at Children’s Memorial Hospital (now Ann & Robert H Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago). I have also received my Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in healthcare at the Haslam School of Business/ University of Tennessee. My professional interests include airway management, airway device design, pediatric patient safety, trainee education, clinical operations, and anesthesia staffing/business models.
My clinical research has focused on airway research in children. I have designed and conducted several randomized trials. I have lectured nationally and internationally on the topic of airway management in children, specifically the use of supraglottic airway devices and fiberoptic intubation in children (both in the normal and difficult airway). I speak on Difficult Airway Management (Refresher Course lecture) at the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Annual meeting. On the Board of Directors for both Society for Airway Management Meeting (SAM) and Society for Head & Neck Anesthesia (SHANA). I was the Program Chair for the SAM Annual Meeting in 2018. I am currently the Vice-President for SAM.
I am a senior editor American Board of Anesthesiologists Advanced written exam and a Senior Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiologists. I am on the Editorial Boards of Anesthesia & Analgesia (Section Editor for Airway Management), Pediatric Anesthesia, Journal of Clinical Anesthesia, and Journal of Anesthesia.
