Professor Cooper was the founder and former Director of the Anesthesia Advanced Airway Fellowship at Toronto General Hospital (with trainees from Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, Australia, Brazil, Israel, Singapore). As well as being a Past President of The Society for Airway Management (SAM): 2012-14; Professor Cooper is a DAS Faculty Professor, recipient of the SAM Distinguished Service Award 2017 and member of the Project for Universal Management of the Airway (PUMA) Executive Committee. He gave the Ovassapian Lecture at ASA Annual Scientific Meeting, 2018 and World Airway Management Meeting 2019
His primary academic interests include; alternatives to direct laryngoscopy, clinical applications of video laryngoscopy and extubation of the difficult airway. Author of many original articles, editorials, 30 book chapters and co-editor of “The Difficult Airway—An Atlas of Tools and Techniques in Clinical Management” 2013 (Springer), he has been an invited speaker at numerous international conferences and workshops. His non-professional interests include stone carving and endurance athletics (he has completed 25 marathons including 3 Boston Marathons). He is also an artisan bread baker, luthier and violinist.
